The Brambles by Eliza Minot

The BramblesThis is the first book by Minot that I’ve read. Her style reminds me of Anne Tyler’s, although Tyler is a better writer.

Three adult siblings are trying to cope with the various challenges of their individual lives, while at the same time coming to grips with their father’s terminal cancer. Then Edie, the youngest sibling, discovers a secret that brings the family together. It was a decent book, but nothing too exciting.

What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman

What the Dead Know: A NovelTwo sisters disappeared as children 30 years ago. Now, a mysterious woman has appeared in Baltimore, claiming to be the younger sister. She has a good story to tell, but something isn’t adding up. Who is this woman, and if she is one of the missing sisters, where has she been all this time?

Lippman wrote a good story with a great mystery to solve and an unexpected ending. I enjoyed reading the book, but it wasn’t very intense. There was no sense of danger or suspense. Even though Lippman is a mystery writer, this book is more of a novel about family dynamics.
