Manipulates Parents and Harms Young Minds

This book was so fantastic, and there’s so much I’d like to say about it, but I don’t have the time! I do encourage parents and those who are about to become parents to read this book. I’ve read a lot about children and parenting–discipline, sleep schedules, feeding, health, etc. But I never considered the importance of reading a marketing book until now. This book has changed the way I watch TV, stroll through Target and make any type of purchase decision for my children.
A few highlights:
- “A marketer who establishes ‘educational credit’ can get away with anything.” p. 3
- “Baby Einstein offers bright, shiny chaos…[the researcher] speculated that babies seemed riveted by these videos because they were sucked into a loop from which they couldn’t escape. Every time they tried to process what they were seeing, to make sense of an object or action, the scene would shift to something different.” p. 104
- “Good marketers realize that [young children] see characters and figures right away, and they want kids to recognize the product, and the best way to do that is through characters.” p. 125
- Regarding books based on licensed characters, according to an author of such books: “These books are not sold on the writing…These books are sold on concept and cover design. Buyers for a Wal-Mart or a Barnes & Noble don’t say, ‘Let me see how well-written the stories are.’ The writing–and even the pictures–are, unfortunately, not that important.” p. 178
- Regarding free “curriculum” that Scholastic and Disney give away to thousands of preschools and daycares nationwide: “…most teachers keep the video of the TV show to pop in the VCR…and even more important, put up the poster featuring the TV-show characters in a place where the children can clearly see it every day.” “They’re getting exposure to the character and the idea that it’s educational. That’s really the goal, as far as marketing goes.” p. 204
Wondering how Baby Einstein changed everything about marketing to parents and children? Ever considered the crazy success of Thomas & Friends? How about the “Disney Princess” family? And then there’s Elmo’s World, Nickelodeon, Leap Frog, Playhouse Disney, Sesame Street…
How is a parent to combat the constant barrage of marketing? Susan Thomas’ simple conclusion:
To vaccinate against the baby genius virus…may require participating in something many of us are uncomfortable with: doing Nothing…Doing Nothing means that adults and their young children have periods of unstructured time when they can see what just unfolds. Doing Nothing isn’t mediated by television, classes, computers, or educational toys…Whatever else, doing Nothing isn’t overthinking; it’s just hanging out. To adults, this may not seem like much, but to babies and toddlers, it is the foundation of life [emphasis mine]. p. 227
The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue

Henry Day is stolen by some changelings when he is 6 years old. Henry goes to live in the forest with the other changelings, and becomes “Aniday.” Meanwhile, a changeling takes Henry’s place in life. No one knows that the boy who was “Henry” has disppeared. No one knows that the boy who is now Henry is really an imposter.
But a simple synopsis of this book cerainly doesn’t do it justice. Donohue’s book is rich with detail and depth. He explores the parent-child relationship; the power of books, reading and writing to bring meaning and understanding; the beauty of friendship; the myth of the changelings; and the freedom of forgiveness.
My favorite quote comes when a changeling observes a human boy reunite with his mother after an hour playing at the park. The changeling observes:
A thin smile creased [the boy's] face when she arrived, and without a word he jumped down from the swing, grabbed her hand, and off they went. Their behavior and interaction baffled me. Parents and children take such everyday moments for granted, as if there is an endless supply.
The changelings spend hundreds of years longing for a human family. Too often I feel as if I spend the time I have with my children wishing it was naptime! The reminder that the moments I have with my precious children are finite is a timely and necessary one.
Bringing the Boy Home by N. A. Nelson

A great adventure tale. Nelson alternates between the stories of 2 boys. Tirio was born in the Amazon jungle, but raised in the United States. As he approaches his 13th birthday, he feels the strong call to return home. Luka was also born in the Amazon. His approaching 13th birthday brings a test that will determine his and his family’s place in the tribe. Both boys must face challenges beyond their imagination.
This would be an excellent book for late elementary/early middle school readers. The unique culture and setting are refreshing, and the boys’ hard work, sacrifice, determination and love of family are to be admired.
How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

After Daisy’s father remarries, she goes to live with her aunt and cousins in England. When war breaks out, Daisy is trapped with her new family. And when they are separated from the others, Daisy and her young cousin Piper must figure out a way to reunite with their loved ones. I usually enjoy this genre, but Rosoff’s book didn’t do much for me. It just wasn’t very convincing, and Daisy’s love affair was very distracting.
Everything You Want by Barbara Shoup

Emma is struggling to find a place for herself during her freshman year at college, when her family wins the lottery. Suddenly, Emma and her family have more money than they know what to do with and Emma soon discovers that her problems don’t vanish just because she’s rich.
Money or no money, Emma’s problems are no different from an ordinary college freshman–the kind that take care of themeselves with age and perspective. I wasn’t too impressed with the book overall.
