Tiger, TigerI haven’t read anything by Lynne Reid Banks since I read The Indian in the Cupboard series in grade school, and I didn’t remember much about Banks’ writing. I stumbled onto Tiger, Tiger and decided to give it a try. I was pleased to discover that Banks is a talented author, and has written a fascinating story set in ancient Rome. She definitely has a dark side to her writing, and doesn’t believe in fairy tale endings.

Aurelia is Caesar’s daughter. She lives a life of bored leisure in the palace. When her father gives her a tiger as a gift, Aurelia is captivated immediately. She makes her tiger a pet with the help of the trainer, Julius. However, when the tiger escapes due to Aurelia’s thoughtlessness, Julius is sentenced to death in the Colosseum, and Aurelia must live with the terrible consequences of her actions.
